2003 Race 6 - ENCINO VELODROME - ENCINO CA
Saturday, July 12, 2003[Encino, CA] by Joe Myers - The first velodrome event of the year was marred by a water hazard on the apron in turns ONE and TWO.
A broken sprinkler was apparently the cause and water kept leaking all day. The use of a push broom and squeegee helped a little...but VERY little.
Several drivers had a hard time avoiding the water, and with the tracks surface seeming to get bumpier and bumpier the race was already facing a big challenge.Larry Ruby (Last years 19t champion) fresh off his KIMBROUGH 400 win, would not be so lucky today. Ruby seemed to find the water hole every run, and in the one run where he did appear to miss the water, his car went head on into the back straight wall.
On a good note, the main events were pretty spectacular. In Expert Stock, pole sitter Brian Bond led most of the early laps with Roland Chavarry and Bill Mac fighting for 2nd spot. Bond had a good lead off the line but as Chavarry and Mac battled each other, they were also closing in on Bond.
At one point the pair split Bond on each side. It was Chavarry who came out with the lead, but Bond wasn't done yet as he regained the lead again just a few feet later.
Again the trio did some battling and Bond and Bill Mac touched giving the lead to Chavarry again. Mac quickly closed in and while making his move on Chavarry, they touched. This sent Roland to the infield and dropped Mac back behind the hard charging Bond who regained the lead. This time Brian would hold onto the lead until the finish, taking his second "SUMMER SIZZLER" victory. Bill Mac wound up second with Uncle Buck moving into 3rd ahead of Roland who finished 4th.
Several racer/spectators commented this was one of the BEST mains they had EVER seen in R/C Racing, ever~
