2002 Race 3 - Freedom Park, Camarillo CA

[Camarillo, CA]by Joe Myers - Freedom Park in Camarillo is one of the states oldest R/C facilities still being used.  Set in Freedom Park behind the Camarillo Airport the track hosts normal Road Racing, Dirt Oval and Off-Road events and the occasional Paved Oval events.

Sportsman Stock saw a good competitive field with Steve Jacquez earning the bonus points for TQ spot again.  Second and third qualifying spots went to Keith Brown and Matt Kendal.  Jacquez went on to win the "A" main fending off Lou Maldonado and Dean McCarty.

Kevin Kilber set the qualifying pace in the Sportsman Modified class running a full lap faster than second qualifyier Ed Turney.   It was Turney who had his way in the main when polesitter Kilber's car was only able to make a couple laps before retiring.  Ron Scott and Steve Jacquez finished in the top 3.

The 19t Spec Mod class is always very competitive and almost too close to call.  Today would be no exception.  Paul Cathey too TQ honors with a 38/4:04.49 beating Eric Greco's 38/4:05.54 and Larry Ruby's38/4:05.80.  Results of the main had to be re-created due to Ruby's transponder not counting for a few laps.  Paul Cathey jumped out to an early lead while Ruby suffered a first lap spin, coming out just in front of Cathey on the backstraight.

After review of the results it's my opinion and the race will be scored with Larry Ruby making his way to the front after Cathey had a few small incidents allowing Ruby to make up his lost ground.  Cathey will be scored w/ 2nd and Ricky Gray 3rd.

Some of Oval Racing's "Heavy Hitters" showed up for the Expert Modified race today.  Gary Hamilton, Erik Steenhoven, Brian Boudakian all battled for TQ spot.  Steenhoven would take the honor edging out Hamilton by a couple seconds.  In the main Hamilton jumped out to an early lead after slight contact w/ Steenhoven, but Erik battled right back taking the spot back and never looking back.   Steenhoven went on to make the days fastest run turning in the days only 41 lap run on his way to victory.  Hamilton finished second with Jason Ertrachter

From the Pits

Once again we've got family involved in racing.  Long time series racer Kevin Kilber has got his new wife and daughter  Heather and Jessica involved in making race days a lot of family fun.  Heather and Jessica are having fun banging doors in the Novice Oval Touring class.  I hope to see them around a while and would love to see a few other daughters and/or wives come out and give em a run for their money.
