Series Race #3, Camarillo's Freedom Park, CA
Apr. 21, 2001

[Camarillo, CA] by Joe Myers - Oval racers of the SOUTH-WEST TOUR "Championship Series" had to race with a different twist in race 3 of the series. Camarillo's FREEDOM PARK RACEWAY set the scene for oval racers on a ROAD COURSE. The same cars that are normally seen making only Left Turns had to ask for directions and turn the wheel the other way a few times too.

The race day was threatened by rain on Friday and early Saturday morning delaying practice until the track was dried out. By 8 a.m. the sun was shinning down on track and winds of nearly 40 mph had kicked up drying the track quickly but also creating havoc of it's own. Racing got underway just a little after NOON, and nearly 50 racers got to do battle against this tight twisty road course.

SPORTSMAN STOCK - The qualifying pace was set by Steve Kjorlein taking the TQ points, but in the "A" Main Sam Chaloupka made his way to the front showing that this veteran OVAL Racer could put up a great fight on a road course. Kjorlein finished second with Scott McCaa, Keith Brown and Bobby Pochmora making up the top 5.

19t MODIFIED - Long time R/C Veteran Frank Killam showed the way on the day of the warm up race just a few weeks ago, well this weekend would prove to be no different. Killam routed the field taking both TQ and the "A" main win. Killams 12 second lead over the second and third place cars put him well ahead of the battle. Larry Ruby and Nic Case fought hard the the #2 spot and in the end it would be LARRY RUBY just edging out Case by .3 seconds. Jason Hastings and Scott Madrigal rounded out the top 5.

SPORTSMAN MODIFIED - Wayne Evans got to shine in front of the hometown crowd. Wayne picked up the handle on Road Course racing really well and took the TQ points getting his first pole of this years series. Evans was able to hang on to the top spot in the main as well, beating Vince Guzman who came flying out of the gate at the horn. Finishing 3rd was Ron Scott with Donn Natale and Tom Kendall in the 4th and 5th spot.

EXPERT MODIFIED - Nic Case was the class of the field in Expert Mod taking both the TQ points and out running Scott Madrigal and Cortney Able to take the "A" Main win as well. Case who pulled away to nearly a full lap lead over the rest of the pack is making a strong charge toward back to back series championships. Madrigal finished second with Able taking 3rd holding off Kyle Mohan who was 4th, Roger Pane took 5th spot with Ken Collins finishing 6th.

NITRO - Ed Turney took the two man show beating Patrick Evans.

1/12th Scale - Cortney Able takes the win beating James Albera, Vince Guzman finished 3rd.
