Race #2  Showtime R/C Speedway
March 17, 2001

[Bakersfield, CA] Race two of the "Championship Series" got underway just after 11:00 on Saturday, with more than 60 racers taking to the high banked concrete oval known as SHOWTIME~!   The track is a egg shaped configuration approx. 260ft. "in the groove"  The morning weather was fairly cool and lap times were not all that blistering fast, but when the sun started to warm up the track the competition too go heated up.

The Sportsman Stock class which is always feirce in competitiveness had Sam Chaloupka taking the TQ spot.   Chaloupka beat out Craig Johnson by just over a second.  The top 4 qualifiers were seperated by about 3 seconds.  In the main it was Steve Jacquez who had qualified 3rd who was able to get to the front of the field and take the win.  Robert Pochmara climbed into second spot with Scott McCaa finishing 3rd.  Chaloupka dropped back to 4th spot and Art Hernandez finished in 5th.

In Sportsman Modified the battle for TQ spot went to Kevin Kilber taking his first pole of the year and out qualifying 1st race winner Donn Natale by a whole lap.  When the main got underway the battle was between 2nd qualifier Natale and Tom Kendall who had qualified 3rd.     Natale held off Kendall to take the win, this his second win of the season with Kendall finishing second, TQ Kilber was third while Wayne Evans and T.J. Kendall made up the rest of the field.

19t Spec Mod had by far the most competition this weekend, with 24 entries in this class and some very good drivers making up the field.  The TQ spot bounced all over the place through qualifying but Carlo Albera ended up taking the top spot to earn the bonus points.  Albera who ran a 46/4:05.55 just edged out Tony Gammel who qualified second with a run of 45/4:00.61.    Pole sitter Albera held off a hard charging Nic Case to win the A main with Jason Hastings finishing in 3rd spot.  Arnold Brittain and Larry Ruby rounded out the top 5.

Expert Modified had the ever strong Gary Hamilton taking TQ honors with a 49/403.25 with Nic Case and Tony Gammel both running a quick 48/4:00.54.  Case got the 2nd spot with a faster back up time in another qualifier.  In the main it was all Hamilton who continued to be the only driver in the 49 lap range all day.  Case finished where he started in the #2 spot and Ken Collings moved his way into 3rd.  Leo Tarpley and Tony Gammel finished 4th and 5th.

1/12th Scale cars made the event this time opting not to run at the Velodrome for race 1.  In qualifying it was James Albera showing the way around running a 42/4:00.75 to second qualifier Dwayne Perry aka P-Funk, who ran a 42/4:05.29.  Perry was the man to beat in the main tho, taking the win over Albera and Lou Maldonado who finished 3rd. Donn Natale was 4th with Cortney Able taking a DNS.

NITRO OVAL class is still struggling to find a following, only 3 Nitro racers showed up but they still put on a pretty good show.  Ed Turney who pretty much set the pace all day took the TQ spot and won the main.  Tim Price was second with Ken Collins 3rd.
